Web Design Trends in 2022 That UK Businesses Should Know About
Web Design Is Moving Fast — Here's What Actually Matters
Every year there's a new wave of web design trends, and it can be hard to know which ones to actually pay attention to and which are just noise. As someone who designs and builds websites for UK businesses, I want to cut through the hype and talk about the trends that are genuinely worth knowing about in 2022.
1. Minimalism With Purpose
Clean, uncluttered layouts have been popular for a while, but in 2022 this goes deeper than just white space. It's about removing anything that doesn't serve a function — every element on the page should earn its place. Visitors make decisions about your website within seconds, and a cluttered page sends them elsewhere. For UK business websites, this means leading with what you do, who you do it for, and how to get in touch.
2. Mobile-First Is No Longer Optional
More than half of web traffic in the UK now comes from mobile devices. Google ranks websites based on their mobile performance. If your website looks great on a desktop but falls apart on a phone, you're losing customers and search rankings at the same time. When I build websites, I design for mobile first and scale up to desktop — not the other way around.
3. Page Speed as a Design Decision
Page speed is directly tied to your Google rankings and your conversion rate. A one-second delay in page load time can reduce conversions by 7%. This isn't just a technical concern — it's a design one too. Heavy animations, unoptimised images, and excessive plugins all slow things down.
4. Accessibility Becoming a Baseline
Building accessible websites is increasingly expected. Beyond the ethical case, there's a legal and SEO argument too. Accessibility best practices align closely with good SEO practices: clear headings, descriptive link text, proper contrast ratios.
5. Authentic Photography Over Stock Images
Generic stock photography is being replaced by real photos of real businesses and teams. Visitors can tell the difference, and authentic imagery builds trust faster than any generic stock photo.
If your website hasn't been updated in a couple of years, it's worth having it reviewed — not to chase trends, but to make sure it's performing for you. Get in touch if you'd like an honest assessment of your current site.
